The research team included the professor of neurobiology and behavior Ron Hoy, Paul Shamble, and Gil Menda. This team was initially formed to analyze how these jumping spiders see and how do they react when they see anything. However, they end up discovering that spiders can actually sense the sounds. In a video, Hoy described that they used to monitor the brain activity of spiders. While observing, they found out that the spiders were not only reacting to what they were seeing, but also to the voices.
The researchers were able to do this with the help of a specifically designed 3D printed contraption. They used to hold a jumping spider in place while implanting tiny electrodes into the brain of a spider with the help of a little hole that they made in its head.
